Do you want your doctor to kill you?

Wouldn't it be crazy if our government started requiring doctors to do abortions? That would be so stupid because then what would they require next? Euthanasia?

Apparently there is a law right now that allows doctors to refuse to do things that they find to be morally objectionable. However, they are trying to change the law to require doctors to give out the abortion pill even if that goes against their conscience. They call it the "conscience rule".

You can read more about it here. Pretty interesting that the Obama administration brought this up over a month ago... I haven't heard anything about it. Too many laws to keep up with.

If you don't want the government to require your doctor to prescribe the morning after pill or do an abortion or kill you if you are mostly dead then click here. This takes less than a minute to fill out and you can make your voice heard. Get educated, America.

  1. I'm interested in your thoughts regarding my somewhat different perspective.

From where I stand, the idea that a doctor or pharmacist should be allowed to refuse to do their job because of "conscience" (and what's really meant here is religious belief) is simply wrong.

If one's "conscience" (i.e. religious belief) entails pacifism, then one cannot be a police officer and demand the "right" to refuse to carry/use a firearm. There should be no law protecting such a "conscientious" objection - if you are a pacifist, then you simply don't meet the requirements for the job, and therefore cannot be a street cop.

If one's "conscience" (again, religious belief) entails the idea that pork is evil or "sinful" to eat, that's fine. But it doesn't mean you can be a butcher or deli worker who refuses to serve customers who come in and ask for ham. If you can't do the job, you can't have the job. Know what I mean?

The cool thing about civil rights and freedoms in America is that, at least ideally, yours don't infringe upon mine (nor mine upon yours). Contraceptives, "morning-after" pills, and surgical abortions are all legal in this country, and as such women have a right to their access. We also have a right to not make use of such things, but at the same time people don't have the right to prevent such access to others. Especially when their job is to provide such services.

    Your thoughts?

  2. Once again this is simply an argument about what is right and wrong. You call my conscience - "religious belief". What about you? Your religious belief seems to be in government. What if the government tells us that it is wrong to eat pork? What if the government tells us that street cops can no longer use guns?

Whether you like it or not, this issue of abortion is an issue about what is right and wrong. You think that it's right and I think that it's wrong.

I agree with you about civil rights and freedom in America. I am just trying to keep my rights ... and yours.

  3. I call it "religious belief" because that is expressly what it is. Folks have religious beliefs about contraceptives and think that entitles them to shirk their duties as a pharmacist.

I don't see what my thoughts about gov't have to do with any religious beliefs I might or might not have. Almost all of my post was written concerning job requirements, not gov't. Here's the job, here's what it entails, and if you have a religious belief that prevents you from performing the job, then don't take the job.

I'm not sure that "well you believe that, but I believe this" is particularly productive - it doesn't seem to address my arguments.

I mean, I'm glad you want to preserve our civil rights. But I fail to see how you can preserve the rights of others by arguing that people should be allowed to refuse to do their job due to religious objection, thereby preventing others from enjoying their rights.
